Government Launches Digital ID Integration for Mobile Money
The new system will let mobile money users verify their identity directly through the national ID database, cutting fraud and onboarding time.
The government has launched a new integration between the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) database and mobile money platforms, allowing users to verify their identity electronically when registering for new accounts.
Officials say the system is designed to reduce identity fraud, a persistent challenge in Uganda's fast-growing mobile money sector, while also speeding up account registration.
"This closes a major gap that fraudsters have exploited for years," said a NIRA official at the system's launch.
Telecom operators say the integration will be rolled out to all registration agents nationwide over the coming months.
