Local Boxing Star Eyes Commonwealth Title Shot in Manchester

Kampala-born welterweight boxer Ismail Kiwanuka has been confirmed as the mandatory challenger for the Commonwealth welterweight title, with the bout set for Manchester next spring.

Kiwanuka, unbeaten in his last nine fights, said the opportunity was "a dream come true" after years of competing on the domestic and regional circuit.

"I've worked for this since I was a kid training in Katwe. Now it's here and I intend to bring that belt home," he said.

Uganda Boxing Federation officials say the fight could be a major moment for the sport's profile in the country.
