UN Warns of Rising Food Insecurity Across the Horn of Africa
A new report says drought and conflict have pushed millions closer to crisis levels of hunger in Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The United Nations has warned that food insecurity across the Horn of Africa is worsening, with an estimated 23 million people facing acute hunger amid drought, conflict and economic shocks.
The World Food Programme said funding shortfalls have forced ration cuts in several refugee settlements, including those hosting people who have fled into Uganda from South Sudan and DR Congo.
"Without urgent new funding, we risk a repeat of the severe crises we saw earlier this decade," a WFP regional spokesperson said.
Uganda currently hosts over 1.6 million refugees, one of the largest refugee populations in Africa.
