Tourism Revenue Rebounds to Pre-Pandemic Levels, Officials Say
Earnings from tourism have fully recovered from the pandemic-era slump, driven by rising visitor numbers to national parks and a weaker shilling.
Uganda's tourism sector has fully recovered from its pandemic-era collapse, with earnings surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time, the Uganda Tourism Board said in its latest sector report.
Visitor numbers to national parks, particularly for gorilla trekking permits in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, have climbed steadily over the past two years, with operators reporting near-full bookings during peak season.
"A weaker shilling has, ironically, worked in our favour by making Uganda a more competitively priced destination for international visitors," a tourism board official said.
Industry players are now calling for continued investment in road access to key parks and additional flight connections, arguing that infrastructure remains the biggest constraint on further growth.
