Kampala City Authority Rolls Out New Boda Boda Registration Drive
KCCA says the exercise will bring order to the sector and improve rider safety records ahead of a planned digital fare and insurance scheme.
The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has launched a fresh registration drive for boda boda riders, targeting an estimated 250,000 motorcycles operating in the city.
Riders will be issued digital identification linked to their number plates, which authorities say will help track accidents, enforce safety standards and eventually support a planned rider insurance scheme.
KCCA's Director of Gender, Community Services and Production, Andrew Kitaka, said the registration is free for the first month. "We want every rider captured in the system by the end of the year," he said.
Boda boda associations have generally backed the move, though some riders say they fear it could be used to justify new fees down the line.
