Fresh Floods Displace Hundreds in Kasese District
Heavy rains over the Rwenzori ranges have burst the banks of the Nyamwamba River, forcing families from their homes for the third time in two years.
Hundreds of families in Kasese District have been displaced after the Nyamwamba River burst its banks following days of heavy rainfall over the Rwenzori Mountains.
The Uganda Red Cross Society said at least 340 households in Kilembe and Bulembia divisions had been affected, with emergency shelters set up at two primary schools.
"We are appealing for blankets, clean water and sanitary supplies as the number of displaced people continues to rise," said Red Cross spokesperson Irene Nakasiita.
District officials have renewed calls for the completion of a long-delayed river training project meant to control seasonal flooding in the area.
