African Union Summit Opens in Addis Ababa With Focus on Regional Trade
Heads of state are meeting to review progress on the African Continental Free Trade Area, now in its sixth year of implementation.
African Union leaders convened in Addis Ababa on Monday for the organisation's annual summit, with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) topping the agenda.
AU Commission chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat told delegates that intra-African trade has grown steadily since the agreement took effect, but urged member states to speed up tariff reforms and border infrastructure investment.
Uganda's delegation, led by the Minister of Trade, is expected to push for greater support for landlocked economies that rely on neighbouring ports and transit corridors.
The three-day summit will also address regional security concerns in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa.
